Why IFAs can’t afford to ignore cyber security

When a hacker breaks into an IFA’s inbox, they don’t just steal data – they steal trust.

For advisers, every message, attachment and spreadsheet holds private details about someone’s finances, investments or family plans. It’s not just information, it’s reputation, responsibility and regulation all rolled into one.

The perfect target

Financial advisers and wealth managers are goldmines for attackers.
They hold verified ID documents, signed forms, valuations, pension transfers, bank details and client email trails that read like a handbook for fraud.

Attackers know most firms run on Microsoft 365, with the same login portals, the same email patterns, and in many cases, the same IT setups that haven’t changed for years.

One set of stolen credentials can unlock hundreds of client records.
That’s why phishing remains the number-one threat – and why “I’m careful” isn’t a strategy.

The FCA’s stance on cyber resilience

The FCA doesn’t issue specific technical checklists, but its message is clear: you’re expected to have systems and controls that prevent, detect and respond to cyber incidents.

In practice, that means:

  • Multi-factor authentication

  • Encryption and secure data handling

  • Regular testing of backups

  • Staff training

  • Clear incident response procedures

Under SYSC 13, operational resilience is now part of your ongoing regulatory duty. A breach isn’t just a technical event – it’s a compliance failure.

For smaller firms, that can mean lost business, reputational damage and mandatory reporting to both the FCA and the ICO.

Why insurance alone isn’t enough

Cyber insurance is vital, but it no longer replaces good security.
Insurers now demand proof of key controls before paying out – things like immutable backups, MFA and endpoint detection.
If those aren’t in place, claims can be refused.

We’ve seen insurers asking for Cyber Essentials certification as evidence that firms are managing risk properly. Without it, renewal costs often rise sharply.

Cyber Essentials: simple, recognised, and increasingly expected

Cyber Essentials is the easiest way to prove your firm takes security seriously. It’s a government-backed certification that covers five key controls:
firewalls, secure configuration, access control, malware protection and patch management.

For financial advisers, it’s not just about ticking boxes, it’s about reassurance.
Your clients want to know their information is handled safely.
Your network wants to know you’re resilient.
Your insurer wants to know you’ve reduced your risk.

Through our partnership with CyberSmart, Black Swan makes certification easy.
We monitor your compliance automatically, help with policy templates, train your staff, and provide evidence packs ready for auditors or PI insurers.

It’s one less thing to worry about and a clear way to show the FCA and your clients that you take security as seriously as you take their finances.

Beyond prevention: recovery and proof

Good security isn’t just about keeping threats out, it’s about how quickly you can recover if something slips through.
We’ve seen ransomware hit small advisory firms that didn’t realise their backups were corrupt until they tried to restore them.
That’s why we always emphasise immutable backup, monitoring and recovery testing.

Equally important is proof – the documentation, logs and audit trails that demonstrate to regulators and insurers that your controls are active, not theoretical.

Local trust, national standards

Black Swan Cyber Security Solutions works with financial and professional services firms across Chesterfield, Sheffield, Nottingham and the wider East Midlands, but our systems and partners are used by financial institutions across the UK.

We combine enterprise-grade protection with local support, clear reporting and compliance evidence you can hand straight to your FCA auditor.

Your clients trust you with their future.
They expect you to protect their data with the same care you protect their investments.

Cyber security isn’t a “nice to have” anymore, it’s part of your duty as a regulated professional.
And getting it right doesn’t have to be complicated.
