What is multi-factor authentication and why does it matter?

Cyber criminals are always looking for easy targets. Unfortunately, a password alone isn’t enough to keep them out. That’s where Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) comes in.

What is MFA?
MFA adds an extra layer of security by requiring two or more forms of verification. For example:

  1. Something you know: A password.
  2. Something you have: A code sent to your phone.
  3. Something you are: A fingerprint or facial recognition.

Even if hackers steal your password, they can’t access your account without the additional verification.

Why does MFA matter for small businesses?

  • Passwords are vulnerable: Many people reuse weak passwords across multiple accounts, making them easy targets.
  • Human error happens: Staff might accidentally click a phishing link or fall for a scam. MFA adds a safety net.
  • Cyber insurance compliance: Many policies now require MFA to reduce the risk of breaches.

Phishing-resistant MFA: YubiKeys and more
Standard MFA methods, like codes sent via SMS or authenticator apps, are effective but not foolproof. Cyber criminals have found ways to intercept text messages or trick users into revealing their codes through phishing. That’s where phishing-resistant MFA comes in.

  • What is phishing-resistant MFA?
This is a form of MFA that uses hardware security keys, such as YubiKeys, to provide a stronger defence against phishing. These devices work on a “challenge-response” system, which makes them immune to tricks like fake login pages.

  • How do YubiKeys work?
YubiKeys are small USB or NFC devices that you plug into your computer or tap on your phone. When logging in, you press a button on the device to authenticate. Because it’s a physical device, hackers can’t steal or replicate it remotely.

  • Why choose phishing-resistant MFA?

    • Prevents phishing attacks: YubiKeys verify the legitimacy of the login request.
    • Easy to use: No need to type codes; just plug it in or tap.
    • Supported widely: Major platforms like Google, Microsoft, and many financial services already support YubiKeys.

For businesses handling sensitive data or looking for maximum protection, phishing-resistant MFA offers peace of mind.

How to implement MFA
Most popular platforms like Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, and social media already support MFA, including phishing-resistant options like YubiKeys. It’s quick to enable, and the benefits far outweigh the minor inconvenience.
