Most people still picture cyber attacks the same way.
Someone forcing their way in. Breaking passwords. Smashing through firewalls.
That’s not what’s happening anymore.
What we’re seeing now, day in, day out, is much quieter.
They log in.
No alarms. No obvious signs. Just normal activity… from the wrong person.
The shift most businesses haven’t noticed
The latest threat intelligence report from Blackpoint Cyber shows a clear pattern:
Attackers don’t need to break in if they can blend in.
That means:
- A real username
- A real password
- A real session
From the system’s point of view, everything looks fine.
Which is exactly why it works.
How this actually plays out in a small business
It rarely starts with something dramatic.
It looks more like this:
Someone clicks what looks like a normal link
They log into Microsoft 365
They complete MFA
Job done… right?
Not quite.
Behind the scenes, that session can be captured and reused. The attacker doesn’t need your password anymore. They don’t need to bypass MFA. They’ve already got what they came for.
The report highlights that attackers are now targeting authenticated sessions, not just credentials, meaning access continues even after login is complete.
“But we’ve got MFA”
So do most businesses that get hit.
This is where it catches people out.
MFA isn’t failing. It’s doing exactly what it was designed to do.
The problem is what happens next.
Once access is granted, trust shifts to the session. And that’s where attackers step in.
No brute force. No malware. No noise.
Just access.
Why your existing tools don’t always spot it
Most security tools are built to detect something that looks malicious.
This doesn’t.
The report makes it clear that attackers are now using:
- Legitimate remote access tools
- Trusted software installers
- Normal login workflows
If everything looks like business as usual, traditional controls often let it pass straight through.
This is why identity is now the front door
Email used to be the main entry point.
Now it’s identity.
If someone can access your Microsoft 365 environment, they’re not just reading emails.
They can:
- Reset passwords
- Access files
- Send messages as you
- Move across your systems
…and in many cases, it happens within minutes.
What actually makes the difference
Here’s the part most businesses miss.
It’s not just about stopping attacks.
It’s about spotting behaviour that shouldn’t be happening.
The report found that over half of incidents were stopped before damage occurred when there was active monitoring in place.
That tells you everything.
Speed matters. Visibility matters. Context matters.
Where this fits for your business
If you’re using Microsoft 365, this applies to you.
The question isn’t “are we protected?”
It’s:
Would you know if someone logged in who shouldn’t be there?
Would you know what they did next?
And how quickly would you respond?
