Ransomware protection for businesses in Chesterfield & Derbyshire
Stop ransomware before it spreads, detect threats fast and recover your data with confidence. Layered protection from Heimdal, Huntress and secure backups from Axcient & Connectwise keeps your business, school, or care service safe around the clock.
Stop ransomware before it becomes downtime.
Ransomware rarely begins with a flashing warning screen. It usually starts quietly: a stolen password, an unpatched device, a phishing email, or an admin account with too much reach.
The best ransomware protection is not one tool. It is a layered plan that strengthens sign-ins, limits admin access, patches known weaknesses, detects suspicious behaviour early and keeps secure, tested backups ready for recovery.

Ransomware is a slow build, not a jump scare.
By the time files are encrypted, the attack may already have been moving through the business for days. The visible damage is usually the final stage.
That is why ransomware protection should not only focus on blocking malware. It needs to reduce access, watch for early warning signs and make recovery realistic.
For a small business, school, care provider, charity, parish council or professional services firm, the risk is not just “data”. It is lost trading time, missed payroll, cancelled appointments, disrupted care, safeguarding records, client confidence and insurance stress.
Initial access
A phishing email, stolen password, exposed remote access tool or vulnerable system gives an attacker a way in.
Privilege and movement
The attacker looks for more access, especially admin rights, shared drives and systems that other people rely on.
Data access and theft
Files may be copied before encryption. This is why ransomware is also a data protection and reputational risk.
Encryption and pressure
Systems are locked, data becomes unavailable and the business is forced into urgent decisions under pressure.
How to make ransomware much harder to pull off.
The aim is not to bury your team in technical controls. The aim is to close the easy doors, reduce damage if something slips through and make recovery something you have tested before you need it.
Strengthen sign-ins
Many ransomware incidents start with access. A password gets stolen, guessed or reused. From there, attackers try to log in like a normal person.
- Use MFA on Microsoft 365, remote access, admin accounts and key business systems.
- Move towards phishing-resistant sign-in methods where possible.
- Remove old accounts, shared accounts and weak login paths.
- Monitor for suspicious sign-ins, impossible travel and unusual access patterns.
Apply least privilege
People should have the access they need to do their job, not a master key to the whole building. This limits how far ransomware can spread.
- Separate admin accounts from day-to-day accounts.
- Avoid shared logins and broad “everyone has access” groups.
- Limit admin tools to the people and devices that genuinely need them.
- Review access when people change roles or leave.
Close known holes
Attackers love known weaknesses because they are quick wins. Patch management is one of the least glamorous parts of cyber security, but it matters.
- Patch critical vulnerabilities quickly.
- Prioritise internet-facing systems and remote access tools.
- Cover third-party applications, not just Windows updates.
- Replace or isolate unsupported software and devices.
Detect unusual behaviour early
Waiting for someone to report that files will not open is too late. Detection should look for suspicious behaviour before encryption spreads.
- Monitor endpoints for unusual activity.
- Escalate ransomware-like behaviour immediately.
- Watch identity activity as well as devices.
- Use managed detection where you do not have an in-house security team.
Secure and test your backups
Backups are not a tick-box. They are your recovery route. If attackers can delete, encrypt or corrupt them, they are not enough.
- Keep at least one backup copy isolated from the main network.
- Use immutable or protected backups where possible.
- Test restores before a crisis.
- Document who does what when systems need to be recovered.
Where Black Swan fits in.
We help smaller organisations put this plan into practice without turning cyber security into a full-time job. We review what you already have, explain what matters, close the obvious gaps and help you build layered protection around your people, devices, Microsoft 365, backups and response plan.
Ransomware defence should cover prevention, detection and recovery.
No single product can promise to stop every attack. The safer approach is to build layers that work together.

Smaller organisations often have the same risk, but less time, less budget and fewer people to deal with it.
Small businesses
Protect laptops, cloud accounts, shared files, finance systems and customer data without needing a full-time internal IT team.
Cyber support without in-house ITSchools and MATs
Ransomware can affect registers, safeguarding notes, parent communication, lessons, exams, payroll and trust.

Care homes and domiciliary care providers rely on access to resident records, rota systems, medication notes and communication tools.
Cyber security for care providersProfessional services
Accountants, IFAs, estate agents, recruiters and conveyancers hold sensitive client data and often rely heavily on email.

Ransomware protection questions we are often asked.
What is the best ransomware protection for a small business?
The best protection is layered. Start with strong sign-ins, MFA, patching, least privilege, email security, endpoint protection, managed detection and secure, tested backups. A small business does not need an overcomplicated setup, but it does need more than basic antivirus and hope.
Can ransomware still get past MFA?
MFA helps a lot, but it is not magic. Attackers may try phishing pages, stolen session cookies, weak recovery options or accounts where MFA has not been enforced. MFA should be paired with better sign-in controls, monitoring and staff awareness.
Do backups stop ransomware?
Backups do not stop ransomware from getting in, but they can stop an incident becoming a business-ending crisis. The important part is making sure backups are protected, isolated where possible and tested regularly.
What is the difference between antivirus, EDR and MXDR?
Antivirus focuses on blocking malicious files and activity. EDR looks more closely at endpoint behaviour and helps detect suspicious activity. MXDR adds wider managed detection and response, usually with a security operations team watching for threats across more of your environment.
Do we need 24/7 cyber monitoring?
If your organisation relies on cloud accounts, servers, shared files, care systems, school systems, finance systems or sensitive client data, 24/7 monitoring is worth considering. Ransomware does not wait for office hours.
Should we pay a ransom?
Paying is risky and does not guarantee recovery. It may also create legal, insurance and reporting complications. The safer route is to prepare before an incident: reduce access, detect early, keep secure backups and have an incident response plan.
Can Black Swan help after a ransomware incident?
We can help you understand what has happened, what needs containing and what recovery options may exist. If specialist incident response, legal or forensic support is needed, we will help you involve the right people quickly.
Can ransomware protection help with Cyber Essentials or insurance?
Yes. Controls like MFA, supported software, patching, malware protection, backup checks and staff training often support Cyber Essentials and cyber insurance conversations. We can help you gather evidence and close gaps before renewal or certification.
Let’s turn ransomware from a panic problem into a planned risk.
