Most favicons use 16×16 or 32×32. Larger sizes (128 or 256) are ideal for app icons.

How to use the Image to ICO converter

This tool lets you turn a PNG, JPG or WEBP into a Windows .ico icon file directly in your browser.
The image never leaves your device.

1. Choose your image

  1. Click Choose image.

  2. Select a .png, .jpg/.jpeg or .webp file from your computer.

  3. You’ll see the file name appear next to the button.

Tip: Start with a square image where possible (e.g. 512×512, 1024×1024). It will scale more cleanly.

2. Pick an ICO size

Under ICO size, you can:

  • Select a preset:

    • 16×16 – very small icon (classic browser tab)

    • 32×32 – standard favicon size

    • 48×48 / 64×64 – clearer on higher-resolution screens

    • 128×128 / 256×256 – good for app / desktop icons

  • Or choose Custom size…, then enter a value between 1 and 256.

If you’re not sure, 32×32 is a safe default for most website icons.

3. Convert and download

  1. Click Convert to ICO.

  2. The tool will:

    • Resize your image to the chosen size

    • Centre it on a square canvas

    • Package it as a .ico file in your browser

  3. When it’s ready you’ll see:

    • A short message confirming the size

    • A Download ICO file link

    • A small preview so you can see how it looks

Click Download ICO file and save it – for example as favicon.ico.

4. Where this is useful

  • Website favicons (favicon.ico)

  • Desktop or app shortcut icons

  • iPad icons for your MDM tool
  • Internal tools and portals where you want consistent branding

Because everything runs locally in your browser, it’s a handy way to create icons without uploading client logos or sensitive graphics to third-party sites.

5. Basic troubleshooting

  • “Please choose a PNG or JPG image first.”
You’ve clicked convert without picking a file.

  • “Unsupported file type.”
Only PNG and JPG/JPEG are supported.

  • “Please enter a custom size between 1 and 256.”
If you pick Custom, you must enter a valid size in that range.

If something still looks off, try starting from a higher-resolution, square source image.
