Do I Need NGAV, Managed EDR or MXDR?
Traditional antivirus is no longer enough for many organisations, but not every business needs a full enterprise security stack either. This guide helps you understand the difference between NGAV, standalone Managed EDR and Heimdal MXDR in plain English - including when Huntress Managed EDR makes sense, when Heimdal MXDR becomes the better fit and how to avoid paying for protection you may not actually need.
Do I need NGAV, Managed EDR or MXDR?
Not every business needs the same level of cyber protection. Some need stronger prevention than basic antivirus. Some need human-led Managed EDR. Others need a wider managed security layer across several tools.
This guide helps you choose between NGAV, Huntress Managed EDR and Heimdal MXDR without getting lost in vendor acronyms.
You do not need more cyber jargon. You need the right route.
A lot of organisations already have some form of antivirus. The question is whether it is enough for the way you work now. Cyber insurers, customer questionnaires and attackers have all moved on.
The real decision is not “which acronym sounds best?” It is whether you need stronger prevention, standalone managed detection, or a wider managed platform built around several security tools.
That is why we usually frame this as three practical routes: Nest Protect or Heimdal NGAV for prevention, Huntress Managed EDR for standalone managed endpoint detection, or Heimdal MXDR when you want a broader Heimdal-led stack.
Which route fits best?
You want stronger protection than traditional antivirus, but you are not ready for a fully managed detection service yet. This is often a sensible first step for smaller organisations with tighter budgets or lower immediate risk.
Good fit: Nest Protect, Cygnet Shield or Heimdal NGAV.
You want standalone Managed EDR with human-led investigation and response, without needing to commit to a wider security stack from one vendor.
Good fit: Huntress Managed EDR, with optional Huntress ITDR, Huntress SIEM and Huntress Security Awareness Training.
You want managed detection and response across multiple Heimdal tools, such as NGAV, Patch Management, DNS protection or Ransomware Encryption Protection.
Heimdal MXDR normally makes most sense as part of a wider Heimdal stack, not as a standalone product.
Important difference: Huntress Managed EDR and Heimdal MXDR are not the same buying decision
Huntress Managed EDR is usually the cleaner choice when you want standalone managed endpoint detection and response. It gives you a managed layer around endpoint threats without needing several products from the same platform.
Huntress can also grow with you. If Microsoft 365 identity risk is a concern, you can add Huntress ITDR. If logs and wider visibility become important, you can look at Huntress SIEM. If staff phishing risk is the bigger gap, Huntress SAT is a natural add-on.
Heimdal MXDR is different. It works best when you want managed detection and response across Heimdal modules. It does not really make sense on its own. It normally needs another Heimdal module, such as NGAV, Patch Management, DNS protection or Ransomware Encryption Protection.
That means the better question is not “which one is better?” The better question is: which route fits your setup, risk, budget and future plans?
Quick decision guide
Use these questions as a practical starting point. You do not need perfect answers. The aim is to spot whether NGAV, Managed EDR or MXDR best matches your current situation.
Are you mainly trying to improve basic antivirus?
Do you have someone actively reviewing security alerts?
Do you want a standalone managed endpoint service?
Are you already using or considering several Heimdal tools?
Are cyber insurance or customer checks asking for stronger evidence?
What your answers usually mean
NGAV may be enough if...
You mainly need stronger prevention than basic antivirus, your risk is moderate, and you are building towards better cyber hygiene. This often pairs well with patching, DNS protection and ransomware protection.
Huntress Managed EDR is likely a better fit if...
You want standalone managed detection and response, with human-led investigation, without committing to a full platform stack. This is often the best fit for SMEs, schools and care providers without an internal SOC.
Heimdal MXDR may be worth considering if...
You want managed detection across several Heimdal modules. MXDR is not usually the starting point on its own. It makes more sense alongside tools such as NGAV, Patch, DNS protection or REP.
NGAV vs Managed EDR vs MXDR
| Option | What it does | Best fit | Black Swan route |
|---|---|---|---|
| NGAV | Stronger endpoint prevention than traditional antivirus, designed to stop modern threats earlier. | Smaller organisations wanting better protection without moving straight to managed detection. | Nest Protect, Cygnet Shield or Heimdal NGAV. |
| Huntress Managed EDR | Managed endpoint detection and response with human-led investigation. | Businesses wanting standalone Managed EDR that can also grow into identity, SIEM and training. | Huntress Managed EDR, with optional ITDR, SIEM and SAT. |
| Heimdal MXDR | Managed detection and response across Heimdal security modules. | Businesses wanting a wider Heimdal-led security stack, not just one standalone EDR tool. | Heimdal MXDR alongside NGAV, Patch Management, DNS protection or Ransomware Encryption Protection. |
NGAV
Stronger endpoint prevention than traditional antivirus, designed to stop modern threats earlier.
Smaller organisations wanting better protection without moving straight to managed detection.
Nest Protect, Cygnet Shield or Heimdal NGAV.
Huntress Managed EDR
Managed endpoint detection and response with human-led investigation.
Businesses wanting standalone Managed EDR that can also grow into identity, SIEM and training.
Huntress Managed EDR, with optional ITDR, SIEM and SAT.
Heimdal MXDR
Managed detection and response across Heimdal security modules.
Businesses wanting a wider Heimdal-led security stack, not just one standalone EDR tool.
Heimdal MXDR alongside NGAV, Patch Management, DNS protection or Ransomware Encryption Protection.
Where we would usually point you
- Need better protection than basic antivirus? Start with Nest Protect or Cygnet Shield.
- Need standalone Managed EDR? Look at Huntress Managed EDR.
- Worried about Microsoft 365 logins and identity attacks? Add Huntress ITDR.
- Need log visibility and a bigger detection picture? Consider Huntress SIEM.
- Need staff phishing training as part of the same conversation? See Huntress Security Awareness Training.
- Need help with insurance evidence? Read our cyber insurance questions guide.
Who this is for
You are a school, care provider, charity, parish council, professional services firm or small business that needs better protection, but does not have an internal cyber security team watching alerts all day.
You already have a mature security team, your own SOC, 24/7 monitoring, established incident response processes and clear ownership of every alert.
Common questions
No. NGAV is mainly about stronger prevention. EDR is about deeper detection, investigation and response. Many organisations start with NGAV, then move to Managed EDR when they need human review and response.
Yes. Huntress Managed EDR works well as a standalone managed endpoint detection and response service. It can also be strengthened with Huntress ITDR, Huntress SIEM and Huntress Security Awareness Training.
Not really. Heimdal MXDR makes sense when it is working alongside other Heimdal modules, such as NGAV, Patch Management, DNS protection or Ransomware Encryption Protection.
It can. Many insurers ask about endpoint protection, monitoring, response, patching, MFA, phishing training and backups. The important part is being able to prove what is in place.
