IT support keeps things running. Cyber security keeps threats out.

Most small businesses have someone looking after their IT. Fewer have someone actively watching for phishing, ransomware, account compromise and security gaps.

Your IT provider may be doing a great job with devices, Wi-Fi, email and day-to-day support. But that does not always mean your business is protected against cyber attacks. This page explains the difference in plain English, so you can see what is covered, what might be missing and whether you need extra support.

IT support vs cyber security

Your IT support and your cyber security are not the same thing.

It is one of the most common gaps I see in small businesses. It is also one of the gaps that hurts most when something goes wrong.

Your IT support may be doing a good job. That does not always mean your business is protected against ransomware, phishing, account compromise or data loss.

“We’ve got IT support, so we’re covered.”

I hear this a lot. And I understand why.

If someone is looking after your laptops, Wi-Fi, email, printers and software, it can feel like cyber security is already handled.

Sometimes it is. Often it is not.

That is not a criticism of IT support companies. Many are brilliant at what they do. The problem is that IT support and cyber security are different jobs.

The simple version

IT support keeps your technology working.

Cyber security reduces the chance of attack, spots suspicious activity, limits damage, and helps you recover when something does go wrong.

Most small businesses need both.

A useful way to think about it

Your IT support company is like the building’s maintenance team. They keep the lights on, fix things when they break, and help everything run properly.

A cyber security specialist is the security architect. They check the locks, fit the cameras, test the alarm, watch for suspicious activity, and help you respond if someone tries to break in.

Both matter. The gap appears when one is assumed to cover the other.

IT support vs cyber security: what is the difference?

IT support usually focuses on

  • Setting up and maintaining devices
  • Fixing problems when they arise
  • Keeping systems running
  • Managing software updates
  • Helping staff when something stops working
  • Supporting printers, Wi-Fi, email and day-to-day IT

Cyber security usually focuses on

  • Monitoring for threats
  • Finding vulnerabilities before attackers do
  • Reducing the risk of ransomware and phishing
  • Detecting suspicious behaviour
  • Responding when an incident happens
  • Making sure backups and recovery plans actually work
This is not about replacing your IT provider. It is about understanding where their role ends and where specialist cyber security support may be needed.

The “many hats” problem

If you run a small business, you probably wear more hats than you want to.

Finance. HR. Sales. Marketing. Operations. IT.

Cyber security is often the hat nobody has time to wear. Not because people do not care. Because there is usually no obvious warning sign.

No flashing light tells you your backups have not been tested. No pop-up tells you a phishing email is about to land. No error message says an attacker has guessed a password.

The danger is that the gap stays hidden until the business is already dealing with an incident.

A question worth asking

Ask your current IT provider:

“What happens if ransomware hits us at 11pm on a Friday?”

The answer will tell you a lot.

You are not looking for a perfect answer. You are looking for evidence that monitoring, response, recovery and decision-making have already been thought through.

Where Black Swan fits

At Black Swan Cyber Security Solutions, cyber security is our focus.

We are not a general IT support company with cyber security added to a services list. We help small businesses, schools, charities and care providers reduce cyber risk with practical, proportionate protection.

Threat detection and response

Managed protection that helps spot and respond to suspicious activity before it becomes a bigger problem.

Email security

Protection against phishing, malicious links, account compromise and risky attachments.

Endpoint protection

Security for laptops, desktops and servers that goes beyond basic antivirus.

DNS filtering

Blocking access to known malicious sites before someone accidentally visits them.

Backup and recovery

Helping make sure your business can recover if ransomware, deletion or system failure hits.

Cyber Essentials support

Guidance for businesses that need a recognised baseline, tender requirement or insurance-friendly evidence.

We can work alongside your existing IT support. We are not here to tread on toes. We are here to provide the security layer most small businesses are missing.

How we usually start

You do not need to know every technical detail before speaking to us. That is the point.

A short conversation is usually enough to understand what you already have, what your IT provider covers, and where the real gaps might be.

We listen

We ask about your business, your systems, your current IT support and what you are worried about.

We check the gaps

We look at the common weak spots: email, endpoints, backups, MFA, patching, monitoring and recovery.

We explain your options

You get plain English advice on what matters, what can wait, and what is proportionate for your business.

Common questions

Does my IT company already cover cyber security?

Maybe. Some IT companies offer strong cyber security services. Others focus mainly on support, maintenance and fixing day-to-day problems. The safest approach is to ask exactly what is covered, especially around monitoring, incident response, email security, backups and ransomware recovery.

Do I need cyber security if I already have antivirus?

Antivirus is one layer. It is not the whole answer. Modern attacks often involve stolen passwords, phishing emails, malicious links, fake invoices and cloud account compromise. Good cyber security looks at the whole picture, not just one tool.

Will Black Swan replace my IT support?

No. We usually work alongside your existing IT provider. They continue to handle day-to-day IT. We help with the cyber security layer: threat detection, email protection, endpoint security, DNS filtering, backup resilience and Cyber Essentials support.

Is this only for larger businesses?

No. Small businesses are often targeted because attackers expect weaker defences. Cyber security does not need to be excessive or expensive. It needs to be proportionate to your risk, your budget and the way your business works.
