Your IT may be managed. But who’s directing it?
A Fractional IT Director gives a small or growing business access to experienced IT leadership without employing a full-time IT Director. Black Swan Cyber helps organisations plan their IT strategy, manage suppliers, control technology spending and make sure IT, cyber security and business continuity work together.
Fractional IT Director for SMEs: someone to own the bigger IT picture
You may already have IT support, Microsoft 365, broadband, phones, cloud systems and several different technology suppliers.
But who is actually deciding where your IT is going?
Black Swan's Fractional IT Director service gives small and growing businesses experienced technology leadership without employing a full-time IT Director.
We help with strategy, suppliers, projects, budgets, resilience, cyber security and the decisions that sit above normal day-to-day IT support.
This is not about replacing a good IT provider. In many cases, we work alongside your existing IT support company, MSP and other suppliers — but from your side of the table.
Your IT may be managed. That doesn't necessarily mean it is being directed.
Most smaller businesses do not need a full-time IT Director. But that does not mean they do not need someone thinking like one.
IT decisions often end up spread between the Managing Director, Finance Director, Office Manager, external IT company and whoever happens to know most about technology.
Everyone may be doing their job properly, but nobody owns the whole picture.
Lots of suppliers. No single owner.
Your IT company manages computers. Another supplier handles broadband. Someone else looks after phones, software, backup or cyber security. Who makes sure it all fits together?
Technology decisions become sales decisions
Suppliers naturally recommend the products and services they sell. A Fractional IT Director helps establish what the business needs before deciding what to buy.
Projects happen without a wider roadmap
A server gets replaced here. Microsoft licences change there. A new system appears somewhere else. Individually each decision may make sense, but together they need to support a wider plan.
IT lands on someone else's desk
Owners and senior managers often end up dealing with IT decisions they neither have the time nor the technical background to properly challenge.
Fractional IT Director Essentials
A full Fractional IT Director engagement can be more than a smaller business actually needs.
Sometimes you simply need somebody experienced to step back from day-to-day IT, look at the bigger picture and make sure the important things keep moving.
Experienced IT direction without buying days of consultancy every month
Fractional IT Director Essentials is designed for small businesses that already have IT support but need someone senior to help steer technology, suppliers, budgets, resilience and cyber risk.
It is deliberately light-touch. The idea is not to create more meetings or another layer of administration.
It is about having somebody experienced on your side of the table when important technology decisions need making.
What's included?
Essentials is intended for smaller, relatively straightforward environments. Unused monthly advisory time does not roll over. If your needs are more involved, we will tell you before you commit.
Something more useful than "you can call us if you need us"
Good consultancy should produce visible progress. These are the core deliverables behind the Essentials service.
Technology & Cyber Health Review
A straightforward view of what is working, what needs attention and what can sensibly wait.
One-page Technology Roadmap
What needs doing now, what comes next and what belongs further down the road — tied back to business priorities.
Quarterly Technology & Risk Review
A business conversation about progress, decisions, risks, budgets and priorities. Not a presentation about ticket counts.
90-Day Priority
At least one meaningful improvement is identified and moved forward every quarter so the relationship does not become static.
What does a Fractional IT Director actually do?
A Fractional IT Director provides senior IT leadership on a part-time, retained or project basis.
The role looks beyond today's tickets and asks where your technology needs to be in six months, twelve months and several years' time.
IT strategy
Turn business plans into a practical technology roadmap rather than making isolated IT decisions as problems appear.
Supplier management
Review suppliers, challenge proposals, coordinate providers and help make sure you are receiving what you are paying for.
Budget planning
Understand what needs replacing, what can wait and where technology spend is likely to appear before it becomes an unexpected bill.
Projects and procurement
Help define requirements, compare options and oversee technology projects without relying entirely on the company trying to sell you the solution.
Risk and resilience
Look at backup, recovery, ageing systems, unsupported technology, continuity and the things most likely to cause disruption.
Clear management advice
Translate technical issues into plain English so directors can make informed business decisions without becoming IT experts.
You do not have to change your IT company.
If you already have an IT provider you trust, that can be a very good starting point.
Your MSP or support company can continue looking after day-to-day IT. Black Swan can provide the oversight, planning and business-level direction sitting above it.
Think of it as having someone on your side of the table who understands what the suppliers around the table are talking about.
You are not really buying IT advice
You are buying better decisions, fewer surprises and less senior management time disappearing into technology problems.
Better decisions
You have someone to sense-check proposals and explain the implications before money is committed.
Less reactive spending
Planned technology investment is easier to manage than discovering several systems need replacing at the same time.
Clearer supplier accountability
Everyone knows what they are responsible for and who needs to act when several suppliers are involved.
Less management time lost to IT
Senior people can concentrate on running the business while still retaining proper oversight of technology.
Technology that supports growth
Decisions are made around your people, processes and plans rather than simply replacing whatever you already have.
Fewer unpleasant surprises
Ageing systems, renewal dates, resilience issues and project dependencies can be identified before they become emergencies.
Your first 90 days
No 80-page report designed to sit in a drawer. We start with the business, build a practical plan and then help move something forward.
Month 1 — Understand
We learn how the business works, where it is heading, who supplies your technology and which systems, risks and dependencies actually matter.
Month 2 — Plan
We produce the Technology & Cyber Health Review and one-page roadmap. Together we agree what is urgent, what comes next and what can wait.
Month 3 — Move
We help move the first agreed priority forward and establish the ongoing review cycle.
Three ways to work with Black Swan
You do not need to jump straight into a large consultancy retainer. Start at the level that matches what the business actually needs.
Independent IT & Cyber Strategy Review
A sensible starting point if you want a second opinion before committing to ongoing support.
Includes discovery, a high-level review of the current position, priorities and a practical one-page roadmap.
There is no requirement to continue afterwards.
Fractional IT Director Essentials
Light-touch ongoing direction for businesses that have IT support but nobody internally owning the wider technology picture.
Includes quarterly reviews, roadmap oversight, supplier sense-checking, budget guidance and monthly advisory access.
£395 + VAT initial setup and discovery.
Full Fractional IT Director
For organisations needing more regular involvement, active supplier management, management meetings, project oversight, budgeting, procurement or strategic planning.
The scope and price are agreed around the actual level of involvement required.
What isn't included in Essentials?
Fractional IT Director Essentials is an advisory and oversight service. It is not intended to become an unlimited helpdesk or a bucket of engineering hours.
That boundary is deliberate. It keeps the service focused on the decisions that senior management actually needs help with.
Normally quoted separately
- Day-to-day helpdesk and end-user support
- Hands-on engineering and implementation work
- Large technology projects
- Detailed compliance or certification projects
- Incident response
- Extensive procurement or tender exercises
- Long-running project management
Fractional IT Director vs vCISO: what's the difference?
The roles overlap, but they are not the same.
A Fractional IT Director looks at your wider technology strategy. A vCISO focuses more deeply on cyber security, risk, governance, compliance and resilience.
| Area | Fractional IT Director | vCISO |
|---|---|---|
| Primary focus | Wider IT and technology strategy | Cyber security strategy and risk |
| IT roadmap | Core responsibility | Security-focused roadmap |
| Supplier management | IT providers, connectivity, software and technology suppliers | Cyber security and risk-related suppliers |
| Budgets and lifecycle | Core part of the role | Security investment and risk priorities |
| Projects and procurement | Wider technology projects and purchasing | Security-related projects and controls |
| Cyber security | Considered as part of wider IT governance | Core responsibility |
| Cyber Essentials / SMB1001 | Can coordinate requirements | Detailed guidance, planning and oversight |
| Cyber insurance | Wider business and technology input | Security controls, evidence and risk requirements |
| Best fit | You have IT support but nobody internally owning IT strategy | You need deeper leadership around security, compliance and cyber risk |
What if you need both?
Smaller organisations often do not need two separate senior roles.
We can combine the two into a practical Fractional IT & Cyber Director approach, bringing IT strategy, suppliers, resilience, security and risk into one joined-up plan.
The important bit is not the job title. It is making sure somebody owns the decisions.

And if you do not need one, we would rather say so.
This is likely to be useful if…
- You have several technology suppliers but nobody owns the overall strategy.
- Your Managing Director, Finance Director or Office Manager has become the unofficial IT Director.
- You have good IT support but need more senior strategic guidance.
- You are growing, moving premises, changing systems or planning significant technology investment.
- You want someone experienced to sense-check supplier recommendations.
- You need a roadmap rather than dealing with one problem at a time.
- You want IT and cyber security decisions considered together.
This probably is not for you if…
- You simply need someone to fix a laptop or reset passwords.
- You already employ an experienced IT Director or CIO covering the role properly.
- You only want the cheapest possible technology regardless of longer-term impact.
- You want every IT decision delegated without management involvement.
- You are looking purely for another software reseller rather than advice and oversight.
You aren't being handed to an account manager
Black Swan Cyber Security Solutions was founded by Kevin Walker, who has worked in IT for more than 30 years, including around 20 years supporting schools and other smaller organisations.
Fractional IT Director clients work directly with Kevin.
That matters because the service is built around judgement, experience and being prepared to ask:
"Hang on. What problem are we actually trying to solve?"
Sometimes the sensible recommendation is to invest. Sometimes it is to change direction. Sometimes it is to leave something alone.
IT and cyber belong in the same conversation
Identity, Microsoft 365, cloud services, backup, remote working, AI, resilience and supplier risk cannot sensibly be viewed in isolation.
Black Swan can connect those conversations and translate them into practical decisions for management.
We are based near Chesterfield and work with organisations across Chesterfield, Derbyshire, Sheffield, South Yorkshire and further afield remotely.
A note on supplier independence
Black Swan also supplies selected cyber security and backup services. If we have a commercial interest in a product we recommend, we will make that clear.
The job of the Fractional IT Director is still to start with the business problem and recommend a proportionate approach — not to find an excuse to sell another product.
Fractional and Virtual IT Director FAQs
What is a Fractional IT Director?
A Fractional IT Director provides experienced IT leadership to an organisation without joining as a full-time employee. They can help with IT strategy, roadmaps, suppliers, projects, budgets, procurement, resilience and technology decisions.
What is Fractional IT Director Essentials?
Essentials is Black Swan's light-touch option for smaller businesses. It provides structured technology oversight, a one-page roadmap, quarterly Technology & Risk Reviews, supplier sense-checking, budget guidance and limited monthly access to senior IT advice for £249 + VAT per month, following an initial £395 + VAT setup and discovery.
Is a Virtual IT Director the same thing?
Usually, yes. The terms Virtual IT Director and Fractional IT Director are often used for very similar services. "Fractional" generally emphasises that you are buying a fraction of a senior person's time, while "virtual" emphasises that they do not need to be a full-time employee sitting in your office.
Is a Fractional IT Director the same as IT support?
No. IT support concentrates mainly on keeping systems and users working day to day. A Fractional IT Director looks further ahead: strategy, suppliers, budgets, projects, risk and making sure technology supports the organisation's wider plans.
Will you replace our existing IT company?
Not necessarily. In many cases the best arrangement is to keep a good existing IT provider and add strategic oversight. Your IT company can continue delivering the technical service while your Fractional IT Director helps set priorities, coordinate suppliers and represent the organisation's interests.
What happens in the quarterly review?
The review looks at business priorities, progress against the roadmap, upcoming decisions, risk, budgets, supplier issues and what should happen next. Technical statistics may support the discussion, but the meeting is intended to make decisions rather than simply report activity.
What does the one-page technology roadmap contain?
It provides a simple view of priorities across "now", "next" and "later", together with key risks, upcoming lifecycle decisions and likely investment. The aim is to make direction clear without producing a large technical document nobody uses.
What is the difference between a Fractional IT Director and a vCISO?
A Fractional IT Director covers wider technology strategy, suppliers, budgets, projects and lifecycle planning. A vCISO concentrates specifically on cyber security strategy, risk, governance, compliance and incident readiness. Read more about our vCISO service.
Can one person cover both IT Director and cyber security responsibilities?
For many smaller organisations, yes. It can make sense to combine wider IT leadership with cyber security oversight rather than creating two separate fractional roles. The right structure depends on the organisation's size, complexity, regulatory requirements and risk.
What if we only want a one-off second opinion?
You can start with an Independent IT & Cyber Strategy Review for £495 + VAT. There is no obligation to continue into an ongoing Fractional IT Director service afterwards.
How often would a Fractional IT Director work with us?
Essentials is deliberately light-touch and centres around quarterly strategic reviews, with limited advisory access between meetings. More involved Fractional IT Director engagements can include monthly meetings, supplier calls, management meetings, project oversight or other support where required.
Do you only provide Fractional IT Director services in Chesterfield and Sheffield?
No. Black Swan is based near Chesterfield and naturally works with organisations across Derbyshire, Sheffield and South Yorkshire, but much of the strategic work can also be delivered remotely.
You may not need another IT supplier. You may just need someone on your side of the table.
If your business has IT support but nobody really owns the wider technology picture, talk to Kevin before the next contract, project or major purchase lands on your desk.
No technical presentation. No obligation to buy a retainer. Just a conversation about where you are, what is causing friction and what level of involvement — if any — would actually help.
