1. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA):
   Most platforms like Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace include 2FA for free. This simple step adds a powerful layer of protection against unauthorised access.

2. Use built-in security features:
   Enable free security tools that come with your existing software. For example, Microsoft Defender is included with Windows systems and offers baseline protection.  We do recommend software on top of this though, such as Heindal Next-Gen Antivirus or Huntress EDR

3. Prevent domain spoofing with SPF, DKIM, and DMARC:
   Domain spoofing is when attackers forge your school’s email address to send phishing emails. Implementing SPF (Sender Policy Framework), DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail), and DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance) ensures only authorised servers can send emails on your domain’s behalf. Most email providers support these protocols, and setting them up is often free.

4. Regular staff training:
   The NCSC (National Cyber Security Centre), offers free resources to educate staff on identifying phishing emails and other threats.

5. Network segmentation:
   Separate critical systems (e.g., admin devices) from student networks. This can often be achieved with existing hardware and minimal configuration.

6. Apply software updates:
   Keeping devices and software updated is one of the easiest ways to close security gaps – no extra cost required.  We can automate the process with Heimdal Patch Management or Action1 when budgets allow
