Cyber security at home: How remote work changed the game

The shift to working from home has made life more convenient for many of us -fewer commutes, more flexible schedules, and the occasional appearance of a cat during Zoom calls. But as endearing as our feline colleagues can be, they’re also unwitting accomplices in a growing cyber security challenge. Yes, a cat walking across a keyboard can lead to a data breach or worse, and it highlights a bigger issue: the risks of working outside the corporate firewall.

When employees worked in the office, security was like a fortress, with firewalls, monitoring tools, and IT teams keeping threats at bay. But now, with remote work becoming the norm, businesses must rethink how they protect their data and systems. Devices are no longer shielded by the corporate network, which makes robust endpoint protection more important than ever. Whether it’s preventing malware or stopping accidental data loss (thanks, Fluffy), endpoint protection acts as the first line of defence when a device is used remotely.

Why backing up matters

Endpoint protection is just one piece of the puzzle. Data loss doesn’t only come from hackers or software glitches, it can happen because of spills, power surges, or, yes, even paws on keyboards. Having reliable backups for both devices and cloud services is crucial. The last thing a business needs is to lose critical files because someone forgot to press “save” or a curious cat closed the laptop mid-task.

Cloud services are often seen as a safe bet, but they’re not immune to risks either. This is where the shared responsibility model comes in. While cloud providers secure their infrastructure, it’s up to businesses to protect the data they store there. This means ensuring proper access controls, regular backups, and user education to prevent mistakes.

Turning risks into lessons

The beauty of modern cyber security is that it’s not just about reacting to threats – it’s about learning from them. Every paw tap on a keyboard is a reminder of the unpredictable risks we face daily. Businesses need to consider a multi-layered approach to cyber security, from endpoint protection to cloud backups and employee training.

So, next time your cat makes an unscheduled appearance in your workday, let it serve as a playful reminder. Strong endpoint security, proper backups, and a good understanding of your shared responsibility in the cloud are the foundation of protecting your business in this new, remote-working world. After all, the real breach isn’t just a clawed keyboard – it’s a lack of preparation.

Protect your endpoints, train your teams, and keep your data safe—whether you’re in the office or at home (and watch out for those cats)!
