ClickFix attack - What just happened

⚠️ What just happened?

You just experienced a safe simulation of a ClickFix attack!

✓ Good news: This was completely harmless. The command only opened this webpage. Your computer is safe!

⚠️ In a real attack, this is what would have happened:

  • The PowerShell command would have run hidden in the background
  • It would download a malicious script from an attacker's server
  • That script would execute immediately on your computer
  • Malware would be installed: ransomware, password stealers, backdoors, or spyware
  • Your files could be encrypted, credentials stolen, or your system compromised
  • The attacker would gain remote access to your computer

Why this attack works so well

  • Social engineering: You were tricked into thinking you needed to "verify" or "fix" something legitimate
  • Bypasses security: YOU executed the command yourself, so it bypasses traditional antivirus and security measures that block external threats
  • Looks professional: The fake page looked trustworthy with proper design, icons, and reassuring messages
  • Simple instructions: Easy copy-paste steps that anyone can follow without technical knowledge
  • Auto-copy feature: The code was already in your clipboard - you didn't even need to click a copy button
  • Authority & urgency: Security warnings and verification requests create pressure to act quickly

Real-world consequences

  • Ransomware: Your files encrypted and held for ransom (often $10,000+)
  • Data theft: Passwords, banking details, personal documents stolen
  • Identity theft: Your personal information sold on the dark web
  • Corporate breach: Company networks compromised, leading to data breaches
  • Financial loss: Unauthorised transactions, drained bank accounts
  • Persistent access: Backdoors allowing attackers to return anytime

🛡️ How to protect yourself

  • NEVER paste commands into Run (Win+R), PowerShell, or Terminal unless you know exactly what they do and where they came from
  • Real security checks don't work this way - legitimate CAPTCHAs and verifications never ask you to run commands on your computer
  • Be suspicious of any website asking you to open Run dialog or execute commands, especially for "verification" or "fixing errors"
  • Look for red flags: urgency, technical instructions, suspicious URLs, or processes that seem unusual
  • When in doubt, stop - Close the page and contact your IT department or a trusted tech expert
  • Keep security updated - Use Windows Defender, keep your OS patched, and use reputable antivirus software
  • Enable browser warnings - Don't disable security features that warn you about suspicious sites
  • Educate others - Share this knowledge with colleagues, friends, and family

What made you vulnerable?

Understanding why you fell for this helps prevent future attacks:

  • Trust in authority: The page looked official and used security-related language
  • Desire to fix problems: People want to solve issues quickly without bothering IT
  • Lack of technical knowledge: Most users don't understand what PowerShell commands do
  • Habitual compliance: We're trained to follow CAPTCHA and verification instructions
  • Time pressure: Urgent messages make us act without thinking critically

Remember: If a website asks you to run commands, it's a scam. Close it immediately!

You can now close this tab and return to the demo to learn more about preventing these attacks.

This was a safe educational demonstration. No malware was installed.
