Cyber security for the risks you can see, and the ones you haven’t planned for yet.

Most cyber problems do not start with a dramatic attack. They start with something small: an untested backup, an old staff account, a missed update, a compromised email account or a supplier nobody thought to check.

At Black Swan Cyber Security Solutions, we help small businesses, schools, care providers and trades businesses find those hidden gaps, reduce the risk, and prepare properly for when something goes wrong.

The Black Swan Approach

Prepare for the risks you can see, and the ones you probably haven’t planned for yet.

Most cyber security advice focuses on the obvious: phishing emails, weak passwords and out-of-date software. Those things matter. We deal with them every day. But the problem that causes the most damage is often the one nobody had properly thought through.

We help organisations find the hidden gaps that could stop them trading, then put practical protection, monitoring and recovery plans in place.

Where the name comes from

The term Black Swan comes from Nassim Nicholas Taleb, who wrote about rare events that are hard to predict, obvious in hindsight, and damaging when they arrive.

His point was not that we should try to predict every possible disaster. We cannot.

The point is that we should build organisations that are better prepared when the unexpected happens.

Cyber security is not just about blocking the threats everyone already knows about. It is about asking better questions before something goes wrong.

What this means for your organisation

Cyber incidents are not always dramatic at the start.

They often begin with something small. A missed security update. A password reused in too many places. A backup that has never been restored. A shared mailbox with no MFA. A device nobody is quite sure who owns.

On their own, these things can look harmless. Together, they create the kind of gap criminals look for.

Our job is to help you find those gaps before they become expensive.

Fewer nasty surprises

We help you spot weak points before attackers, suppliers, staff changes or failed systems turn them into a business problem.

Less downtime

We look at how your organisation would keep working if email, files, devices or cloud systems were disrupted.

Clearer decisions

You get plain-English advice on what matters first, what can wait, and where your money is best spent.

We start with risk, not products

We do not start by pushing software. We start by understanding what could hurt your organisation most, what is most likely to go wrong, and what would be hardest to recover from.

That is how we build cyber security that fits your organisation, rather than forcing you into a package that does not match your risks, budget or responsibilities.

1

Find the gaps

We look at the areas most likely to cause damage: email, devices, passwords, cloud accounts, backups, staff access and recovery planning.

2

Prioritise what matters

You get a clear view of what needs attention first, what can be planned for later, and what is not worth overcomplicating.

3

Put sensible protection in place

That may include managed security, email protection, backup resilience, Microsoft 365 security, Cyber Essentials support or staff awareness training.

4

Keep reviewing the risk

Cyber security is not a one-off job. We help you keep your protection, recovery planning and controls aligned as your organisation changes.

What we actually do

Black Swan Cyber Security Solutions is a managed cyber security provider based in Chesterfield, supporting small and medium businesses, schools, care homes, trades businesses and other organisations across Derbyshire, South Yorkshire and the wider UK.

We help you reduce cyber risk through practical, managed protection and plain-English advice. You do not need to become a cyber security expert. You need someone who can look at your organisation, explain where the real risks are, and help you put sensible protection in place.

Our work is built around a layered cyber security model. That means we do not rely on one product, one licence or one quick fix. We help you put sensible layers in place across people, devices, data, email, cloud accounts and recovery planning. You can read more about this on our 7 Layers of Cyber Security page.

We do not sell fear

The cyber security industry has a bad habit of making everything sound terrifying.

We do not work that way.

You will get an honest view of your risks, explained in normal language. No jargon for the sake of it. No scare tactics. No pushing tools you do not need.

Sometimes the answer is a managed security stack with monitoring, email protection, endpoint security and backup resilience. Sometimes it is a smaller set of targeted changes that closes the biggest gaps first.

Sometimes the honest answer is that you are not ready to work with us yet, and there are a few simple things you should sort before spending money.

Our job is not to sell you the biggest package. It is to help you make better decisions about cyber risk.

We are based in Chesterfield. This is home.

We have lived in Chesterfield our whole lives and worked here for over thirty years.

We know the businesses, schools, care homes, charities and tradespeople who keep this part of Derbyshire and South Yorkshire running.

So when a local organisation loses data, loses clients, or loses weeks of trading because of a preventable cyber incident, it is not abstract to us.

It is the same community we live in, work in and care about.

Every conversation starts with the same question: if this were our organisation, what would we actually need?
